Mini Track Review: “Even Though I’m Leaving” by: Luke Combs

Even Though I’m Leavingis a very touching Country song, by Luke Combs, about how your father (or mother if you switch up the parent) is never far, even if they are down the hall, on the other side of the world, or even dead.

The song starts out with some very sweet guitar notes that sound very sentimental, almost as if it was somebody playing their heart strings. It then goes on to tell a story about a little boy who is afraid of the monsters under his bed. He is so scared that he doesn’t want his father to leave, because if he does the monsters will know that he left, and that it is time to come out. So, the boy’s father, being a very kind and understanding man, grabs him by the hand and tells his son the chorus:

“Just cause I’m leavin’ it don’t mean that I won’t be right by your side. When you need me and you can’t see me in the middle of the night, just close your eyes and say a prayer. It’s ok, I know your scared when I’m not here, but I’ll always be right there. Even though I’m leavin’, I ain’t goin’ nowhere.”

The story continues years later, with the boy all grown up and about to be shipped out to the military. The boy may act tough, but he is terrified to his very core, because he can’t call his father if things go south. So, his father reassures him that even if the boy is leaving, the father isn’t going anywhere, and that he will always be in the boy’s heart.

This next verse chokes me up every time. Sure, it starts off with the boy telling his dad that he’s afraid, but this time it’s different. The dad is on his death bed. The boy had never thought that he would ever have to say goodbye to his father, at least, not like this. The boy is beggin’ and pleadin’ with his father to stay, because he can’t do this on his own, and he doesn’t think that he can “walk this road alone”. (I can relate emotionally to that sentiment.)

The father, as kind and as caring as he is, grabs his son’s hand for the last time, and said what is basically the chorus again, but he tells his son that “It’s ok, boy, I ain’t scared. I won’t be here, but I’ll always be right there. Even though I’m leavin’, I ain’t goin’ nowhere.”

Luke Combs really put a lot of thought and effort into this song. He really hit my heart strings, and he is showing that he knows how to be emotional and show how he’s feeling. I mean, you can just hear the passion and love that was put into this song, and all of this started from his buddy saying that he wanted to write a dad song. This song is beautiful, and I would really recommend it to anyone who is ok with being sad.
